BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Seeking redemption from a loss to Saint Francis just days ago, LIU bounced back to defeat the Red Flash 63-56 on Thursday night.
The Sharks propelled themselves to victory by setting the tone very early on. LIU took control by securing a lead in the first quarter, and led by 17 at halftime. The team shot 47% from the field through the first two quarters.
Sirviva Legions and Janessa Williams, both of whom were named NEC Prime Performers this week, led the way for LIU. Legions poured in 18 points to lead all scorers, and Williams flirted with yet another double-double by adding 15 points and 9 rebounds. The sophomore has now tallied at least 15 points and 9 rebounds in each of her last three contests.
Defensively, the Sharks received a big boost from Patricia Sherrill off the bench. She played a season-high 20 minutes while adding 5 points and 6 rebounds. Her impact, however, went well beyond the box score. Sherrill applied steady pressure to the Red Flash's frontcourt players as LIU successfully maintained its lead down the stretch.
LIU shot 39% from three-point range in the contest, with Janessa Williams, Brianna Mead (12 points) and Kaiden Glenn (6 points) all knocking down two apiece from long range. The team now owns a 5-5 record at home.
The Sharks will look to make it back-to-back wins when they host Mercyhurst on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
