BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Sharks opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Roberts Wesleyan at home.
LIU started strong, winning the first two sets. The opening set was tightly contested, featuring six ties and three lead changes. The Sharks seized control in the second set, hitting .429 with 11 kills on 21 attempts.
Roberts Wesleyan responded in the third set, jumping out to a 16-10 lead. LIU fought back, winning nine of the next 12 points to tie the set at 19-19. Both teams exchanged leads before the Redhawks won the third set, 26-24.
The Sharks clinched the match in the fourth set, handing Roberts Wesleyan its first defeat of the season. Chase Celichowski led the team with 14 kills, while Dominik Budny added eight kills and hit .545. Luca Holanda and Jack Sarnowski contributed 23 and 16 assists, respectively.
LIU's next match is Friday, Jan. 17, when the Sharks host Barry University at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
