BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The Sharks won their second consecutive match with a 3-0 victory over the Barry Buccaneers.
Christopher Knowles led LIU with 11 kills, while Roei Horovitz recorded 29 assists. Kale Spencer added nine kills, and Chase Celichowski chipped in eight.
LIU jumped out to a fast start, scoring 10 straight points to claim the first set, 25-9. Knowles paced the Sharks with five kills on eight attempts. The LIU defense held Barry to a hitting percentage of -.250.
The second set was back and forth, with five ties and three lead changes. Tied at 15-15, LIU capitalized on a Barry attack error and a Horovitz kill. Spencer added four kills on four attempts in the second set. The Sharks closed the set on a 7-1 run to go up 2-0.
In the third set, LIU took an early 8-4 lead, but Barry fought back to tie it at 8-8. The Buccaneers briefly led before LIU knotted the score at 20-20 on a Knowles kill. Spencer sealed the win with a set-point kill.
The Sharks are 2-0 to start the season for the second time in program history. Next, LIU will travel for midweek games against Lees-McRae College on Jan. 22 and Purdue Fort Wayne on Jan. 23.
