BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The LIU softball team took on Sacred Heart in the rubber match of its NEC series on Sunday afternoon.
Sacred Heart took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single, but Lindsey Cowans settled down and prevented any further damage.
Emma Niece would tie the game in the second on a bomb of a home run to right center field and from there it was a pitchers duel for the rest of the game. Until the top of the fifth, the game would only see three hits from both teams combined. In the fifth, Sacred Heart would capitalize on an LIU error and take the lead, 2-1.
The Sharks would try to fight their way back and threatened after a Devon Medina pinch-hit double in the bottom of the seventh but could not get the run across and ultimately fell 2-1.
LIU will return to the field on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Wagner.
