BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The LIU softball team hosted Wagner in a pair of afternoon matchups on Tuesday.
In game one, the Sharks were led by a dominant performance in the circle by
Lindsey Cowans and picked up runs thanks to timely hitting by
Gabby Padilla and
Emma Niece in the third inning.
Padilla drove in
Dallas Andrews with an RBI double and in the next at bat Niece drove in Padilla to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
The LIU bats went quiet from there, but Cowans was able to shut down Wagner, earning her 15th win of the season while striking out five and only allowing one run in a 2-1 win.
Game two saw some late fireworks for LIU.
Alyssa O'Donnell ran into some trouble in the first inning, allowing a run to give Wagner an early 1-0 lead but from there settled in nicely.
The Sharks had chances to tie the game up but were unable to break through until the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff
Devon Medina single, LIU played some small ball with a SAC bunt from
Victoria Zatko then pinch running
Priscilla Gillies for Medina. With one out,
Mari Narvaiz flew out to right to move Gillies to third and in the next at bat
Dallas Andrews smoked a single to center field to tie the game.
Lily Hinkle came to the plate, hit a line drive single to center fielder and initially Andrews was called out at the plate. Head coach
Roy Kortmann appealed that the Wagner catcher blocked the plate, not allowing Andrews a fair chance to score and after a conference, the umpires decided Kortmann was correct and Andrews was called safe, giving LIU a 2-1 lead.
Gabby Padilla kept the momentum rolling and drove in Hinkle with her second RBI double of the day.
O'Donnell kept the Seahawks quiet in the sixth and in the bottom half of the inning, the Sharks scored two more on
Dallas Andrews' second and third RBIs of the day. Four runs would be enough as O'Donnell earned her eighth win of the season in a 5-1 victory.
The Sharks will return to the field Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. to wrap up their series with Wagner.
