BROOKLYN, N.Y — The LIU softball team took on Sacred Heart in a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Game one featured a gritty comeback win from the Sharks. Down 3-1 in the sixth inning, Lindsey Cowans crushed a two-run home to left field to tie the game. She then shut down the Pioneers in the top half of the seventh, setting LIU up for the chance to win it. An Alyssa Polemeni single and Kaylee Clarkson walk followed by a passed ball set the table for Lily Hinkle. The freshman dunked a ball in front of the shortstop and beat out the throw to first to drive in Polemeni for the winning run.
Cowans earned her 14th win of the season, Hinkle went 3-4 and Jazmine Cuffie went 1-2.
In second leg of the doubleheader, Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning and the Sharks fought hard to claw their way back. The game was seemingly out of reach after a three-run Pioneer homer but LIU kept on fighting in the seventh inning. The Sharks were able to get two runs across and threatened with the bases loaded, but a questionable out at second base after a Lily Hinkle line out would end the game, 7-3 Sacred Heart.
The Sharks will return to field Sunday at noon for the rubber match of the Sacred Heart series.
