BROOKLYN, N.Y. — The LIU volleyball team took on Merrimack on Friday night, looking for its sixth win in a row.
In the first set, the Sharks looked to take control with a 1-0 lead but the Warriors stormed back from down four to steal the set and take a lead themselves.
LIU kept its composure as every time Merrimack tried to put its foot on the gas, the Sharks would respond with a clutch point. LIU would win the second set without much of a problem to tie the match.
The third set was a battle as both teams wanted the all important 2-1 lead. Neither the Sharks or Warriors were able to gain a lead of larger than two points. A Merrimack block would tie the set at 23 until a Warrior attack error and kill by Chase Celichowski would give LIU the win.
In the fourth set the wind was out of Merrimack's sails. The Sharks took advantage of the momentum swing and won the match in four sets (21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-21).
Livan Moreno led the team in kills with 14, followed by Kale Spencer with 12 and Chase Celichowski with 10.
Moreno, Alex Weinhaus and Roei Horovitz all had the team lead in digs with 10.
Horovitz recorded a career-high 37 assists in the match.
Spencer and Kasey Clouet both led the team with three service aces.
Clouet had a team-high four blocks, followed by Arthur Sueur who had three.
The Sharks return to the court Saturday night 5 p.m. when they take on Sacred Heart.
