PRINCETON, N.J. — Before the LIU women's hockey team took the ice at Hobey Baker Memorial Ice Rink on Tuesday night, they knew they had to play their best hockey of the season to knock off No. 14 Princeton.
LIU erased a 1-0 deficit midway through the second period when Jeannie Waller's shot-pass was redirected into the back of the net by
Maggie Culp, tying the game at 1.
Nationally ranked Princeton clawed its way back to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission — but it did not last long.
LIU tied the game at 2 thanks to an
Ashley Morrow wrist shot from the left circle with 11:44 remaining in regulation.
Abbie Thompson was solid in goal once again. The graduate student goaltender stopped 38 shots against the Ivy League powerhouse.
Princeton went on to score a pair of third-period goals in the Tigers' 4-2 win.
"Our team executed our game plan and competed for the entire 60 minutes, which is not easy to do against the 14th-ranked team in the country," said head coach
Kelly Nash. "We are not satisfied with the loss, but we are motivated to keep building off of the way we played."
LIU returns to the Northwell Health Ice Center for a two-game series against Robert Morris on Friday and Saturday.
Saturday's 2 p.m. game marks the second annual
White Out the 'Well, during which all fans are encouraged to wear white.
