BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Amaya Dowdy may have led the NEC in blocks last season, but on Sunday she flashed her scoring prowess to help the Sharks earn a 63-61 win over Northeastern.
Putting on the hero cape in the game's waning seconds, Dowdy rose to the occasion and attacked the paint. She scored a clutch bucket with just seven seconds left to put LIU up for good against the Huskies.
Dowdy finished with an efficient 6 points and 5 rebounds in just 11 minutes of action, joining a number of Sharks who had memorable performances. Much like Dowdy,
Sirviva Legions is also known as a savvy presence on defense, currently fourth in the NEC with 1.8 steals per game. On Sunday, however, she went on to have a banner day offensively with a season-high 21 points, shooting 8 of 15 from the field. She led the way early as the Sharks secured a four-point lead at halftime, and the squad went on a 10-0 run between the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third to take control.
Northeastern fought back and ultimately took the lead briefly in the fourth quarter, but LIU showed resilience and determination down the stretch.
Janessa Williams, who finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds, tied the game back up at 61 apiece with a timely three-point field goal with 1:01 remaining, ultimately setting the stage for Dowdy to score the game-winning bucket and help the Sharks pull away with the victory.
LIU will look to keep rolling in its next game, a Sunday, Dec. 8 matchup against Fordham at 12 p.m.
