EAST MEADOW, N.Y.— Goaltender
Tindra Holm and the LIU women's hockey team flirted with the program's first-ever win against a ranked opponent.
However, the Sharks suffered a heartbreaking defeated as No. 5 Northeastern opened the scoring while shorthanded a pair of skaters late in the third period en route to a 2-0 victory on Saturday night at Northwell Health Ice Center.
Only seconds before Katy Knoll had opened the scoring for the Huskies with 5 minutes, 36 seconds remaining in regulation and the Sharks with a 5-on-3 advantage,
Mikayla Lantto had nearly slammed in a shot at the left post at the other end that originated at the point.
Northeastern added a goal from Taze Thompson with 4:18 remaining to ensure it escaped the upset bid.
LIU (0-2) was swept in back-to-back games against the Huskies during the season-opening series and remains in search of its first goal of the season.
The Sharks had enjoyed the third-period two-man advantage for 94 seconds.
Holm recorded 38 saves, including stopping a breakaway attempt from Holly Abela in the second period that sent the game to the second intermission still scoreless.
Holm nearly fueled a win against a ranked opponent as a freshman, too.
The Sharks took No. 5 Yale to overtime, also in East Meadow, before falling 2-1 on Nov. 23, 2001. Holm made 54 saves that day.
