BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Goalkeeper
Keely Thomas' feats to begin her collegiate career now include stopping a penalty kick.
Thomas made the penalty-shot save midway through the first half on Sunday, energizing her LIU women's soccer teammates in the home opener against UMBC. However, the Sharks ultimately suffered their first blemish of the season, falling to the Retrievers, 1-0, at LIU Soccer Park.
Thomas, a redshirt freshman from Richmond, Va., had opened her collegiate soccer career with back-to-back shutouts, against Saint Peter's and Rider. She extended the streak to 191 minutes, 28 seconds before conceding her first goal on Sunday.
LIU had chances throughout the game, including
Noa Bartels van Bosbeek's first-half shot deflected by the goalkeeper and then off the right post.
The Sharks outshot the Retrievers, 17-13.
Thomas made six saves.
LIU continues nonconference play on Thursday against NJIT.
