FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Marcin Maleski scored with 42 seconds remaining to pull the LIU men's lacrosse team within a goal, but the would-be equalizer at the final buzzer was not awarded to the Sharks by the officials and host Sacred Heart survived for a 10-9 victory on Saturday.
Tom von Bargen,
Mark Regan,
Sean Boll and
James Butler contributed two goals apiece in the defeat, which dropped LIU to 3-2 in MAAC play.
LIU trailed 9-6 entering the fourth quarter, but goals from Boll and von Bargen less than a minute apart early in the period allowed the Sharks to move within one goal.
Sal Miccio's goal for Sacred Heart with 5 minutes, 13 seconds remaining restored a two-goal lead for the Pioneers. Sacred Heart then narrowly averted the equalizer after Maleski scored in the final minute.
The Sharks return to action next Saturday when they host Canisius at 1 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
