BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Lindsey Cowans' excellence in the circle and pinch runner
Priscilla Gillies' alertness on the bases combined to lift the LIU softball team to a 1-0 win against Saint Francis U in Monday's series finale.
Cowans surrendered only two hits and one walk in the 102-pitch shutout.
Meanwhile, Gillies scored the game's lone run with a heads up play in the fifth.
After
Maya Avila produced a one-out single, Gillies pinch ran. She then stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Then, on
Devon Medina's strikeout, Saint Francis needed to complete the play by throwing to first base.
Gillies broke for the plate and slid around catcher Madeline Barnes for what turned out to be the decisive run.
LIU salvaged the series finale after dropping a doubleheader to the Red Flash on Sunday.
Next up for the Sharks: St. John's visits the LIU Softball Complex for a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday.
