Mark Regan to open the period — and three goals overall by Regan in the quarter — helped the Sharks take a 9-8 lead into intermission.
LIU maintained a one-goal lead entering the fourth quarter, but Mount St. Mary's eventually pulled ahead 14-12.
Regan's team-high fifth goal of the game, which came with 1:55 remaining, pulled LIU within a goal. However, Mount St. Mary's closed the game with a pair of goals while down a man.
Brad Beck contributed a hat trick in the defeat.
LIU dropped to 1-1 in MAAC play.
The Sharks next host Siena next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
