BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — The LIU men's lacrosse team's MAAC debut was a resounding success.
Mark Regan scored six goals and the Sharks held off VMI, 14-13, on Saturday at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium.
LIU opened the game with four straight goals in the first 3 minutes, 13 seconds.
And when the Keydets grabbed an 11-8 lead in the third quarter, the Sharks answered with five consecutive goals — capped by three straight from Regan — to take the lead for good.
VMI pulled within 13-12 with 7:14 remaining, but
Brad Beck restored a two-goal cushion with 4:42 to go.
Bidding to force overtime, the Keydets were turned away on the game's final possession, with
Sean Gillman making the final of his 11 saves with four seconds left.
Regan, a redshirt sophomore, finished with a career-high and team-high eight points.
Beck had four goals and an assist.
LIU was playing its first-ever MAAC game.
Next up: The Sharks (2-4, 1-0 MAAC) travel to Mount St. Mary's for game next Saturday at noon.
