ROCK HILL, S.C. — The LIU softball team earned its first walk-off win of the season on Friday.
Reigning NEC Rookie of the Week
Alexia Castro doubled and scored in the bottom of the seventh as the Sharks rallied to beat North Carolina Central, 4-3, in the teams' opener at the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament.
LIU overcame a 3-0 deficit.
Alyssa Okada's sacrifice fly in the fourth got the Sharks on the scoreboard. An inning later, LIU pulled even at 3 on Castro's run-scoring double, then a passed ball on which she later scored.
Leadoff hitter
Mari Narvaiz went 3-for-4.
Castro had a pair of doubles, RBI and two runs scored.
Gabby Padilla also had two hits.
Lindsey Cowans earned her first LIU win with three scoreless relief innings that included four strikeouts. She stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts of Jai'lyn Edwards and Jaden Davis.
The Sharks continue at the Winthrop-hosted tournament with a pair of games on Saturday — a rematch with North Carolina Central at 3 p.m., then a game against the host school at 5:30.
