Men's Water Polo Wraps Up Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, Grabs Win Over Fresno Pacific

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. —  The LIU men's water polo team wrapped up the Julian Fraser Memorial tournament on Sunday after a match with No. 4 Pepperdine.

On Saturday morning, the Sharks grabbed their fifth victory of the season when they defeated Fresno Pacific 12-10.

LIU was locked in a back-and-forth battle with the Sunbirds. Neither team was able to gain control of the match until the third quarter when Karl Lovett and Anthony Gauna rattled off three goals to give the Sharks some breathing room.

Fresno Pacific would battle back, but clutch goals. By Sam Odenkirk and Tony Franco would seal the game and give LIU the win.

Lovett and Franco led the team with four goals while Ben LeClair scored two.

In the second match on Saturday LIU took on nationally ranked San Jose State. The Sharks kept it close early, only trailing by two after the first period but the Spartans would score four straight goals in the second to seize control of the match. LIU continued to fight, but fell 16-8.

Josep Jodra Muñoz led with four goals, followed by Karl Lovett (two), Riyad Shehadeh (one) and Anthony Gauna (one).

On Sunday afternoon, LIU played its third nationally ranked opponent of the weekend in Pepperdine.

Sam Odenkirk opened up the match with the first goal giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead, but it did not last long as the Waves scored a barrage of goals in response. LIU fell 23-5.

Ethan Zirh finished the weekend with 37 saves in three matches.

The Sharks return to the pool when they take on Connecticut College in the Steinberg Wellness Center Friday at 4 p.m.
