Women's Volleyball Completes Weekend NEC Sweep With Win Over Stonehill

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  Rumur Rouille and the LIU women's volleyball team gained a ton of momentum going into their road trip next week, completing the sweep of their weekend NEC doubleheader against Stonehill in three sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-19).

The Sharks fell behind 3-0 early in the first set, but they did not let a bit of adversity put them down. They came storming back gaining a lead of their own. The rest of the first set was back and forth with neither team able to seize a steady lead. The Sharks and Skyhawks were tied at 23 until Camelia Melendez and Indira Benitez recorded back-to-back kills to give LIU the set.

The second set was more of the same. Whenever the Sharks seemed to gain a lead, Stonehill would rally back and tie it up. Essentially mirroring the first set, the score was once again tied at 23 until Amaris Smith tallied back-to-back kills herself to give the Sharks an. Important 2-0 lead.

In the third set LIU led by as much as eight and the feisty Skyhawks kept trying to claw their way back. Stonehill was able to get within one, but it would not be enough. The Sharks pulled it together and closed the door with kills by Rumur Rouille, Smith, Benitez and Melendez.

Rouille impressed, scoring a tie for the team-high 13 points with four kills and nine blocks. Melendez recorded 13 points as well, tallying nine kills, three service aces and a block.

Amaris Smith led the team with ten kills and added four digs. Indira Benitez was tied for second with nine kills and was second on the team with eight digs.

Alasha Colon led the Sharks with 13 digs, putting her season total at 435.

Selina Koç led LIU in assists with 27. She now has 543 on the year.

The Sharks return to the court when they travel to take on Central Connecticut State Friday at 5 p.m.
