Women's Volleyball Grabs Big Conference Win Over Merrimack

BROOKLYN, N.Y. —  The LIU women's volleyball brought home a big conference victory on Friday night when it defeated Merrimack in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 25-20).

The win puts the Sharks conference record at 4-2 and into a tie for second place with FDU.

The match went back and forth for a majority of it, with big momentum swings going both ways. The Sharks took the first set, but the Warriors fought back and stole the second.

In the third, LIU jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, but once again Merrimack would not go away. The Warriors were able to claw their way back and get within in one, but a service error would seal their fate and give the Sharks a 2-1 lead.

From there, LIU would close the door on any chance of a comeback. The Sharks gained an early 7-3 lead in the set and would not look back from there. Six straight LIU points late in the set would all but close the match and the Sharks took home the win.

Camelia Melendez led the team with 17 kills and added nine digs. Indira Benitez was second with 11 kills and Amaris Smith tallied 10.

Alasha Colon tallied 25 digs on the night, putting her season total well above 400 as it now sits at 422.

A game after recording her 1,000th career assist Selina Koç added 44 more, which is tied for her second highest mark on the year.

Rumur Rouille was a big part of the victory, putting together one of her best matches of the season. She tallied nine kills and 7.5 blocks, finishing second on the team with 16.5 points.

The Sharks return to the court tomorrow on Saturday night when they take on NEC foe Stonehill at 5 p.m. in the Steinberg Wellness Center.
