EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — A showdown for first place in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance ended in a stalemate.
LIU overcame a two-goal deficit and ultimately tied Saint Anselm, 4-4, on Friday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center.
LIU had a golden chance in the extra session, but
Carrigan Umpherville's breakaway was turned away by Saint Anselm goaltender Allie Kelley.
The Sharks had trailed 2-0 before
Megan Bouveur's goal in the first period and then
Jeannie Wallner, Bouveur and
Abby Latorella's goals in the second period allowed LIU to surge to a 4-2 lead.
Saint Anselm answered with a pair of third-period goals to even the score.
LIU (11-10-2, 10-1-2 NEWHA) and Saint Anselm (11-11-2, 10-3-2) remain tied for first place in the conference with 23 points apiece, although the Sharks have played two fewer NEWHA games.
The Sharks are now unbeaten in their last 11 NEWHA games (9-0-2).
The teams meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Northwell Health Ice Center.
