EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Carrigan Umpherville scored in dramatic fashion and the LIU women's hockey team grabbed the inside track to the New England Women's Hockey Alliance's regular-season title.
Umpherville scored on a penalty shot with 94 seconds remaining in overtime and the Sharks defeated Saint Anselm, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center.
"I've never been in that situation before," said Umpherville, a senior forward from Cross Lake, Manitoba. "I was super-nervous and super-excited. It was a great team win and we're excited to move forward from here."
The Sharks had entered the day tied with Saint Anselm in points atop the NEWHA standings, albeit with LIU having two games in hand.
The teams had played to a 4-all tie on Friday.
LIU now owns an 11-1-2 NEWHA record, while Saint Anselm dropped to 10-4-2.
Umpherville also scored the equalizer on Saturday, pulling the Sharks even at 1 early in the second period.
Goaltender
Tindra Holm made 25 saves.
LIU returns to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against Post that opens on Friday at 3 p.m. at Northwell Health Ice Center.
