Tiger Tamers! Men's Hockey Tops Princeton as Riley Wallack Nets Game-Winner

PRINCETON, N.J. — The LIU men's hockey team picked off another college hockey blue blood on Saturday night.

Riley Wallack produced the game-winner with 10 minutes, 54 seconds remaining on a deflection in front and the Sharks defeated ECAC-member Princeton, 6-4, at Hobey Baker Rink.

Valtteri Piironen's first collegiate goal, an empty-netter with 37.0  seconds remaining, sealed the victory.

Patriks Marcinkevics scored twice in the second period to pull LIU out of a two-goal deficit.

LIU erupted for four goals in the second period.

Preston Brodziak's first goal of the season got the Sharks on the scoreboard and trimmed LIU's deficit at the time to 2-1. Cade Mason's power-play goal from the point with 1:21 remaining in the second period gave LIU its first lead, 4-3.

Then, with the teams tied at 4 midway through the third period, Wallack redirected a shot from Mason for the decisive goal.

Wallack also won 14 of his 18 faceoffs.

The Sharks went 2-for-4 on the power play and killed five of six shorthanded situations. LIU blocked 28 shots, led by four apiece from Austin Rook and Chris Pappas.

"It was a total team effort and great win for the program," coach Brett Riley said. "It was an excellent job by our power play and penalty killing units and a great commitment to blocking shots. I could not be more proud of the team."

LIU was making its second trip to Princeton in the past two weeks. The Tigers prevailed 5-2 on Jan. 13 in a physical game.

The Sharks continue to be a thorn in the side of college hockey's top programs. On Oct. 9, LIU tied fellow ECAC member Quinnipiac, which subsequently rose to the nation's No. 1 ranking. LIU defeated then-No. 12 Ohio State, 3-2, on Nov. 25.

On Saturday, goaltender Brandon Perrone made 29 saves for the Sharks.

LIU now returns home to face Stonehill on Feb. 3 and 4 at Northwell Health Ice Center.
