EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The first weekend of
Kelly Nash's tenure left the LIU women's ice hockey head coach pleased with her squad's potential.
Fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth, a national finalist last season, completed a two-game sweep of the Sharks with a 5-0 win Sunday evening at Northwell Health Ice Center.
The teams were scoreless after one period. A power play goal from Bulldogs defenseman Ashton Bell 19 seconds into the second period opened the scoring. Minnesota Duluth ultimately produced three goals that period.
LIU goaltender
Tindra Holm's amazing weekend continued. She recorded 53 saves on Sunday.
Holm made 61 saves in Saturday's season-opening 4-1 loss — a defeat that included a pair of empty-net goals by Minnesota Duluth in the final minute.
LIU returns to action next weekend with games on Friday and Saturday at Northeastern.
"I think there are a ton of positives," said Nash, the first-year head coach. "Looking at this past weekend, it shows we can compete with some of the best teams in the country. Opening up our season, 13 practices in, with the national runner-up, we're feeling pretty good and see a lot of potential with the team."
