Women's Hockey Stands Tall against Nation's No. 3 Team

BOSTON — The LIU women's ice hockey team went toe-to-toe with one of the nation's top teams on Friday night.

Mikayla Lantto's second-period goal opened the scoring, but the Sharks ultimately fell to third-ranked Northeastern, 3-1, at Matthews Arena.

The teams entered the third period tied after the Huskies answered Lantto's goal with a score by Peyton Anderson 37 seconds later that trickled its way past goaltender Tindra Holm.

As she did in back-to-back games against then-No. 5 Minnesota Duluth to open the season last weekend on Long Island, Holm kept the Sharks in contention against an elite team.

This time, Holm — the reigning NEWHA Goaltender of the Week — made 60 saves.

She had career-high 61 saves in the season opener against Minnesota Duluth.

The decisive score against Northeastern came on a shot from the blue line from Jules  Constantinople with 10:55 remaining in the third period.

Northeastern, playing its season opener, outshot LIU 23-6 in the first period, but the game remained scoreless heading into the first intermission.

Lantto's goal in the second period came after Jeannie Wallner scooted down the right side and fed her across the goal mouth.

"We felt good going ino that third period," coach Kelly Nash said. "The difference between this weekend and last weekend was I feel like we tied more of the game together. Going to the third we felt pretty strong. We had a consistent 40 minutes."

The teams play the second of back-to-back games on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena.
