MANHASSET, N.Y. — The LIU rowing team gave back to its community on Sunday.
The first-year women's and men's teams volunteered at the Jimmy Regan 5K Memorial Run in Manhasset, to salute a hometown hero while commemorating the anniversary of 9/11.
The student-athletes helped set things up, distributed water to runners on the course, served food and helped with registration.
The annual event is held in memory of Sgt. James Regan, who played lacrosse at Manhasset and Chaminade high schools and at Duke before enlisting in the Army.
He was killed in action in 2007 while serving in the U.S. Army's 3
rd Batallion, 75
th Ranger Regiment in Iraq.
Proceeds benefited the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund.
"This is an organization my family has been involved with for a while," LIU head coach
Jaclyn Smith said. "It benefits wounded Army Rangers who made it home after serving our country."
