BROOKVILLE, N.Y. — Before training resumed in preparation for Saint Peter's, the LIU women's soccer team paused on Tuesday morning to recognize a milestone.
As practice began, the team presented a signed ball to head coach
Lucy Gillett to recognize her first victory as a collegiate head coach.
The win came Sunday against Delaware State in the home opener, 2-0 behind goals from María Camila Orozco and
Gina Proviano.
A surprised Gillett initially said she didn't intend to make a speech.
Prodded, she then said about receiving the signed soccer ball from her team: "My first little trophy up in the office. I want a bigger trophy, but this will do for now."
The Sharks (1-1) return to action at 5 p.m. on Thursday against Saint Peter's at the LIU Soccer Park as part of a doubleheader. The men first face Stony Brook at 2 p.m. in their season opener.
Gillett ascended to the head coaching role with the Sharks in April.
