BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's lacrosse team returned home to face Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, falling to the Mountaineers, 13-9. With the result, the Sharks move to 2-11 overall and 1-3 in Northeast Conference play.
There were four goals scored in the first four minutes of the game, including a goal from
Rachel Weber, to give Mount St. Mary's an early 3-1 lead. Minutes later,
Leah Nonnenmann got space in front of cage and fired in a goal to bring the game within one.
The Mount responded with two straight goals before
Francesca Vasile-Cozzo scored from a Hannah Keneally assist. It was 5-3, Mountaineers, after the first.
The second period saw a combined seven goals, beginning with
Olivia Fantigrossi at the 10:53 mark to bring the deficit to one goal. The Mount held and added four more in the period, not before goals from Keneally and Nonnenmann to make it 9-6, Mountaineers, at halftime.
In the third, both teams added a goal to move to the fourth with the Mount leading, 10-7.
Amanda Masullo scored her team-leading 21
st goal in the third to try and bring the Sharks back into the contest.
An exciting sequence kicked off in the fourth when Nonnenmann notched a hat trick off Kenneally's third assist to bring the game within two. After the Mountaineers hit the post on a free positon,
Catherine Robles picked up the ground ball, fired it down field, and Nonnenmann scored her fourth goal, making it 10-9 with 7:53 to go.
That was as close as the Sharks would come, as the Mountaineers added three straight scores to close the contest, 13-9.
Hailey Duchnowski was given the loss in cage after recording 10 saves.
