FAIRFIELD, CONN. – Thanks to a career day from
Whitney Moran, LIU women's lacrosse picked up its second Northeast Conference win against Sacred Heart on Saturday, taking down the Pioneers, 9-7. With the victory, the Sharks improve to 3-11 on the season, including a 2-3 mark in conference play.
LIU outshot the Pioneers 27-23 on the afternoon that resulted in nine goals. Five of those came from Moran, who picked up a new career-high with her performance. Moran scored all five of her goals unassisted as she was able to anchor the offense and help secure the victory.
Francesca Vasile-Cozzo,
Amanda Masullo,
Isabelle Peng, and
Olivia Fantigrossi each scored, as well.
Hailey Duchnowski saved 12 shots on the afternoon, her highest total in a win this season. Sacred Heart led 4-2 after a quick goal to start the second, but the Sharks never looked back, going on a key 3-0 run that spanned a total of just five minutes to take a 5-4 lead in which they never surrendered in the remainder of the game.
The last time that LIU won a game by scoring less than 10 goals came over two years ago when they downed Manhattan, 7-5, on February 12, 2020. The defense caused four turnovers on the day, including a turnover forced by
Gina Toscano when the Pioneers controlled the draw down one in the fourth but were never able to regain a lead or tie the game.
The Sharks will wrap up their road slate this Wednesday, April 20 at 4:00 p.m. against Central Connecticut State. Following their meeting with the Blue Devils, the Sharks conclude the regular season with two games at home against Merrimack and Howard.
