EMMITSBURG, M.D. – LIU men's lacrosse engineered a 4-0 scoring run in the fourth to come from behind and defeat Mount St. Mary's, 14-10. With the victory, the Sharks move to 6-5 and 3-1 in the Northeast Conference.
LIU began the game by scoring within a minute, courtesy of
Nick Colantonio, to take a 1-0 lead. After a missed shot from the Mountaineers,
Sean Boll found
Blake Behlen for a score to increase the lead to 2-0. Mount St. Mary's scored three unanswered to take its first lead in the opening frame.
Richie LaCalandra scored his first goal of the afternoon on an unassisted chance to tie the game at three with four minutes left. It was tied, 3-3, heading to the second. Boll added his first at the 10:06 mark to give LIU the lead, 4-3.
LaCalandra was able to fire in his second goal minutes later to push the Sharks lead to two goals.
Owen Stefanko was able to find the back of the net for his first goal of the season, and just 40 seconds later, LaCalandra earned a hat trick to make it 7-4, LIU. The Mountaineers added a goal to make the halftime score 7-5.
Two different Sharks scored to start the second half in a matter of seconds.
Will Snelders scored by himself at the 12:06 mark in the third, and
Jake Gillis scored off a set from Stefanko, swelling the lead to 9-5. The Mount rattled off five straight to retake the lead, 10-9, with 1:40 to go in the third.
That is when the LIU run began, thanks to Snelders tying the game after a Sharks timeout at 10-10. LIU blanked Mount St. Mary's in the fourth with goals from LaCalandra to retake the lead at 11-10, followed by another from Snelders and two more from Behlen, bringing the final to 14-10.
Will Mark was instrumental in the comeback, notching 20 saves that included two in the fourth to keep the lead, to earn his sixth win in cage in 2022. The trio of LaCalandra, Behlen, and Snelders combined for 10 goals, their highest combination this season.
