Men’s Volleyball Battles Sacred Heart

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men's volleyball team hosted the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Friday night in the Steinberg Wellness Center, falling 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23). It was a match filled with long, dramatic rallies and back and forth game leads and set wins, but the Sharks we're overtaken late in the fourth set to have SHU secure their victory.
 
SHARK BITES
  • The first set was led by the Pioneers hitting .292 percent only narrowly before they pulled away to take the set 25-17 over the Sharks to lead the match 1-0.
  • LIU came out hot in the second set, taking an 8-3 lead over the visitors with a long rally play and some hard hitting from Giomar Collazo and Eddy Alexandre. The Sharks held on, leading 18-13. With another long rally ending in an epic tip turned kill from Caden Satterfield, the Sharks grabbed the 21-16 lead and forced a Pioneer timeout. Collaza got the final point for LIU in the set and the match was drawn even at 1-1 with the 25-21 set victory.
  • Set three started out with Sacred Heart jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead, but just as quickly, the Sharks tied it up at 6-6. Once the Sharks took a 10-9 lead, it turned into a back-and-forth set with the lead exchanging hands time and time again. Eventually, Sacred Heart grabbed the 25-22 set victory to take a 2-1 match lead.
  • It was another close start to a set, the Sharks and Pioneers battling it out. LIU took the lead at 12-11 but the set was tight, getting knotted up at 23-23. The Sharks ended up falling 25-23 when the Pioneers took the last four points of the set to claim the 3-1 match victory.
  • Leading the Sharks offensively, Luke Chandler had 18 kills while also getting low for seven digs.
  • Collazo had 12 kills and 8 digs to his line on the stat sheet for the match.
  • In their final game of the season, the Sharks are at home tomorrow, April 9 at 12 p.m. taking on the visiting FDU Knights.
