BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The LIU men's volleyball team faced off against their cross town neighbors, St. Francis Brooklyn, on Tuesday night in the Steinberg Wellness Center and defeated the Terriers 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-10) in a tightly contested Battle of Brooklyn.
SHARK BITES
- The first set was closely battled throughout, with the two schools tied up multiple times. The set was knotted at 21-21, but St. Francis took four of the last six points of the set to claim the 1-0 match lead with a set score of 25-23.
- In set two, the Sharks kept a slight edge throughout the majority of the frame, leading by two to three points at times, but St. Francis tied it all up at 21-21 for the second set in a row. In a turnaround of the first set though, LIU would take four of the last six points to take set two 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.
- Set three started out just as the others, the score going back and forth once again, the teams seeming to be stuck in a deadlock. The Terriers edged their way ahead, leading 18-14 at one point, but the Sharks came back to tie it all up at 24-24 and thanks to an ace from Luke Chandler followed by a Terriers attack error, the Sharks claimed the set 26-24 and took the 2-1 match lead.
- In set four, LIU had the slight edge and a big-time solo Chandler block to put the Sharks up 12-8 had the Terriers taking a timeout, but St. Francis took a lead at 20-19 and continued on to take the set 25-22 and the match would go to a deciding fifth set.
- In the fifth, LIU took control, leading the entire time thanks to some heavy hitting from Caden Satterfield and Chandler, the Sharks took the third set and claimed the 3-2 match victory.
- Chandler and Hasan Hadžic each had 12 kills on the night, followed closely by Satterfield with 11, all three leading the Sharks.
- Chandler also sent four services aces over the net.
- Setter Luca Holanda had a 47 assist-night.
- The Sharks have just two matches left in the regular season and both are going to be played at home. The first of the two is Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. against Sacred Heart University.
