BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – On a chilly day on Long Island, the LIU softball team came back from a 6-2 deficit against Wagner College to prevent them from sweeping the series, winning 8-6 over the Seahawks on Thursday afternoon.
Wagner scored two in the top of the first to start the game off, but the Sharks struck right back, starting the inning with a leadoff double from
Camryn Lyman. The second baseman was able to score off of a
Ryleigh Bermea single down the right field line. Bermea was able to reach the plate as well when
Maya Avila reached first on an error by third base and the score line was even 2-2 after one.
Nothing was going for either team in the second, but in the third the Seahawks had a two-run home run that was followed by a solo homer and they were ahead 5-2. Wagner then scored another off of a double and were leading the Sharks 6-2.
In the top of the fourth,
Desiree Smith would come on to pitch for the Sharks and hold Wagner off the rest of the matchup. In the bottom of the fourth was when then LIU bats turned hot. With Cisneros and Lyman on base and two outs, Bermea hit a banger to left that made it over the fence and the Sharks were only down 6-5 heading into the fifth.
It seemed to be that the LIU offense needed the pressure of two outs to really get things going, as all three of their three runs in the fifth came in with two outs.
Kiana Cisneros got three RBIs when she reached on an error and Lyman,
Alyssa Polemeni, and
Angelina Reno were able to cross the plate.
Smith got the win on the mound for the Sharks when she managed to keep the Seahawks scoreless through the last four frames of the game.
Coming up, the Sharks are on the road for a three-game series against Central Connecticut State on Saturday for a double header. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
