SHARKS WIN! Two Maya Avila Home Runs Send Softball Soaring Over Sacred Heart, 11-3

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The bats were on fire on Saturday morning for the Sharks when they took on Sacred Heart in the final game of the series. The blaze seemed to belong to Maya Avila, who's two home runs and one double drove eight of the Sharks' 11 runs across the plate to down the Pioneers 11-3 in five innings.

In the bottom of the first with two outs and two on base, Avila stepped up, knocking one deep center over the fence, scoring Kiana Cisneros and Ryleigh Bermea and the Sharks headed into the second up 3-0.

In the top of the second, SHU got one run back when Amy Petrovich got a home run of her own, sending the ball over the left field fence and just out of reach of Katie Hinkle's glove. In the bottom of the second though, the Sharks were back at it again, tacking on two more runs when Camryn Lyman drove in Kristen Blanchard and a Cisneros double then drove in Lyman to have the Sharks up 5-1 heading into the third.

LIU added another run in the third with Ciara Granado scoring thanks to an Avila double. Then in the fourth, Avila, with bases loaded, stepped up and on the third pitch of the at bat, sent one over the left field fence. The grand-slam scored Granado, Bermea, and Cisneros to give the Sharks their 10-1 lead.

The Pioneers would earn two more runs in the top of the fifth off of two hits, but the bottom of the fifth when the Sharks had their at bat, Alyssa Polemeni dealt the final blow with one additional run to end the game 11-1. Polemeni had gotten to second when Blanchard sacrifice bunted; she then advanced to third on a passed ball and stole home when a missed throw between pitcher and catcher enabled the freshman to cross the plate.

Alyssa O'Donnell, 8-7, earned the win on the mound for the Sharks, pitching the entire game.

The Sharks will be back in action at home on Tuesday, April 19 for a double header versus Wagner College. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
