BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Despite the LIU softball team scoring the first run of the day, the Wagner Seahawks claimed the series over the Sharks with wins in the first two of the three games to play, taking game one 4-1 and then game two 5-1.
The Sharks got on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second to start game one.
Angelina Reno started the inning with a leadoff double and thanks to a bunt by
Kristen Blanchard and a miscued throw from Wagner's catcher, Reno was able to cross the plate.
The lead only held for a few more plays though, as the third batter up to the plate for Wagner in the top of the third earned an RBI when she pushed a teammate over home and the game was tied 1-1.
Wagner would then go on to take another run in the top of the fifth off of three hits, and added two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth with one hit and one error to hold a 4-1 lead that would decide the ballgame.
In game two, the Seahawks hit hard and hit early. A three-run home run in the bottom of the first for Wagner set the tone for the matchup and had them ahead 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, it was a
Kristen Blanchard bunt again, but this time it was to get on base to start the inning. Then, a
Kiana Cisneros triple to center field scored Blanchard for the Sharks sole run of game two.
In the top of the fifth, Wagner would add another run off of three hits before adding one final run in the top of the seventh to claim game two 5-1.
Tomorrow, April 21, the Sharks and the Seahawks face off against each other in game three of the series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
