BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – On Friday, the LIU softball team took on Sacred Heart in a double header at home and ended up winning both games, taking the first 8-3 and the second 9-4 over the Pioneers.
The Sharks hit four home runs over the course of the two games. Two of which were from
Ryleigh Bermea who hit one solo home run early in the second game and one three-run homer late in the second to seal the deal for the Sharks.
SHARK BITES
GAME 1 – LIU 8, SHU 3
- In the first game of the day, Sacred Heart started the scoring in the second, crossing three runs over the plate, but LIU responded quickly with five of their own in the bottom of the second to take the 5-3 lead. Nothing was going again for either team again until the bottom of the sixth when the Sharks tacked three more runs on to take the game 8-3.
- The Pioneers scored their three runs of the game in the second inning from three hits and one error. They left two on base.
- The first run of the day for the Sharks was an Angelina Reno solo home run. Kristin Blanchard got on base with a hit to second and then stole second to get herself into scoring position. When Katie Hinkle singled to second, Blanchard moved over to third. Hinkle then stole second and two were in scoring position with one out and Camryn Lyman up to the plate.
- Lyman singled and Hinkle got to third while Blanchard scored and the Sharks only trailed one, 3-2. Kiana Cisneros then singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw, scoring both Lyman and Hinkle. The tide turned and LIU was up 4-3. The final run of the inning came when Cisneros was pushed across the plate by a Ciara Granado single. It was the Sharks leading 5-3.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Blanchard crossed the plate a second time, thanks to a Ryleigh Bermea single. Blanchard was on base after a single up the middle, had advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hinkle, and then third when Lyman hit a single. Lyman then stole second and Cisneros walked to get on base. Granado flew out to right field, but advanced Cisneros to third and scored Lyman.
- The final run of game one came when Cisneros crossed the plate thanks to a Maya Avila single and the Sharks claimed game one, 8-3.
- Alyssa O'Donnell, now 7-7, got the win on the mound for game one.
GAME 2 – LIU 9, SHU 4
- It was LIU that started the scoring in game two, taking one run in the bottom of the second. The Pioneers responded with a run of their own in the top of the third, but LIU regained the lead with one more run in the third, the score 2-1. In the top of the sixth, Sacred Heart went ahead with three more runs of their own, leading 4-2. In the bottom half of the inning though, the Sharks put up seven runs to regain the lead and put up a final score of 9-4 and take game two.
- The first run of game two was a Maya Avila home run to put the Shark up 1-0.
- In the top of the third, the Pioneers put themselves on the board with one run from two hits and an error.
- In the third, Ryleigh Bermea got her first home run of the day when she hit a solo homer to put the Sharks up, leading 2-1.
- That score line would hold until the top of the sixth when Sacred Heart would take three runs off of four hits to lead 4-2.
- The Sharks bit back though in the bottom of the second, adding seven runs to claim the series win.
- Ciara Granado led off the inning with a double to center field and right behind her, Maya Avila was walked, forcing a pitching change from the Pioneers. Emily Money would also come on to pinch run for Avila. Angelina Reno would get two RBIs with a single when both Granado and Money crossed home plate to put the Sharks and Pioneers level at 4-4. The next five LIU runs would come across the plates with two outs on the board for the Sharks.
- Kiana Cisneros would push two more across the plate when she singled to right field and drive in Katie Hinkle and Blanchard. The Sharks were up 6-4.
- When Bermea hit her home run, she scored Camryn Lyman and Kiana Cisneros and LIU took home the 9-4 victory.
- Elena Valenzuela (4-9) earned the win on the mound for the Sharks in game two of the series.
Up next, the Sharks are facing off against Sacred Heart again in the series finale tomorrow, April 16 at 11 a.m.
