BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The LIU women's lacrosse team welcomed Wagner to town on Wednesday for a Northeast Conference tilt, falling to the Seahawks, 10-4. Following the result, the Sharks move to 2-9 overall and 1-1 against NEC opponents.
Wagner was able to get on the board first on a free position shot to take an early 1-0 lead. LIU responded when
Whitney Moran found
Hannah Kenneally in front of cage, who spun around a defender and fired in the Sharks first goal to tie the game at one apiece with 8:44 left in the period.
The Seahawks would put in three unanswered goals to end the first, leading 4-1. In the second, the deficit would grow to 6-1 for the Sharks before an answer by
Leah Nonnenmann with 2:32 to go until halftime to bring the game to 6-2. Just when Wagner was about to try and score with seconds remaining,
Alyssa Boll poked the ball free to let the clock run out. It was 6-2, Seahawks, heading into the locker room.
The third period produced three goals between both teams with Wagner scoring two within a minute to swell the lead to 8-2. The Sharks responded with 21 seconds remaining when
Olivia Fantigrossi scored at point-blank range to bring the game to 8-3.
Nonnenmann added her second goal of the contest off Kenneally's second assist to make it 9-4, Seahawks. Wagner would score one more goal at the latter part of the fourth to bring the final score to 10-4.
Hailey Duchnowski was given the loss in cage, picking up 15 saves to add to her total on the season that is good for fifth in the NCAA coming into this afternoon. Boll finished the game with three caused turnovers.
Up next, the Sharks will travel to Bryant on Saturday, April 2 for a 3:00 p.m. start.
