QUEENS, N.Y. – LIU baseball traveled east to face St. John's on Tuesday, taking down the Red Storm, 4-2. The Sharks were led by
Michael Edelman, who went 4-5 on the day with a solo homerun late in the contest to seal the victory.
SHARK BITES
- Ryan Neuweiler took the mound for LIU in his third start of 2022. He began the matchup with a one-two-three inning in the first and got out of a jam in the second with runners on first and second. The game was scoreless heading to the third.
- In the bottom half, St. John's got a solo home run from Jackson Tucker to take a 1-0 lead.
- Heading to the top of the fourth, the Sharks loaded the bases with singles from Carlton Harper and Luke Turner and a walk drawn by Christopher Wasson. Seth Surrett was able to groundout on a fielder's choice, but not before scoring Harper to tie the game at 1-1. The Red Storm would tag another run in the fourth to retake the lead, 2-1.
- To respond in the fifth, LIU would once again load the bases. This time, Giovanni Ciaccio singled to right, Edelman singled to left, and EJ Exposito walked. Ciaccio would score from third on a wild pitch to Harper, tying the game up at two apiece.
- With the bases still juiced, Turner would draw a walk to bring home Edelman that gave the Sharks their first lead at 3-2.
- Chris Buehler would come in for Neuweiler in the sixth, tossing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen with a strikeout.
- Leading off the top of the seventh, Edelman got ahold of the first pitch he saw, hammering a homerun to left center to move the score to 4-2, LIU. Edelman's homerun was his second in three games.
- Nick Torres would relieve Buehler, going the distance to collect his third save of the season. Torres was lights-out, allowing no hits and no earned runs through two and a third innings of work. He faced three batters in the ninth and got three groundouts to close down the game.
- Neuweiler picked up his second win of the year after throwing five and two thirds innings, collecting three strikeouts while giving up six hits and only one earned run.
Up next, the Sharks return home to host Manhattan for their first home contest of 2022 on Wednesday, March 16 at 3 p.m.
