BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – LIU baseball had its first home game of the 2022 season on Wednesday against Manhattan, falling to the Jaspers, 11-9. With the loss, the Sharks move to 8-8 on the year.
SHARK BITES
- The Jaspers scored two runs in the first off two RBI singles to take an early 3-0 lead. In the top of the second, they tagged three more runs to grow the advantage to five runs heading to the bottom of the second.
- Luke Turner doubled to left to begin the bottom half, and Christopher Wasson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Bentley Boekhout bunted and reached to load the bases. Jack Power grounded out to second, but not before scoring a run to cut the deficit to 6-1, Manhattan.
- In the bottom of the third, the Sharks loaded the bases with two walks and a hit by pitch. Michael Edelman was able to score on a wild pitch to bring the Sharks closer. Wasson then grounded into a fielder's choice to score another run, making it 6-3.
- The Jaspers would tag another run in the fourth to take a 7-3 advantage in the fourth. Fast forward to the home half, Boekhout walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Myles Proctor and Jack Power were both hit by pitches to load the bases once again.
- Connor Price singled to right center, and Giovanni Ciaccio walked home a run to bring the game within one. EJ Exposito would later fly out to left to score Power, tying the contest at seven apiece.
- Manhattan would respond with two runs in the fifth to retake the lead, 9-7.
- Edelman and Exposito singled in the bottom of the sixth, and Luke Turner would slap a single to center to score Edelman, making it 9-8, Jaspers.
- The Sharks would tie the ballgame again when Ciaccio reached on an error and Colin Adams scored, locking up the game at 9-9.
- In the top of the eighth, Manhattan scored the go-ahead run on an RBI double before adding another insurance run, bringing the game to 11-9. The Sharks left three on base in the ninth before Ciaccio flew out to end the game.
- Ryan Doherty earned the win, and Kurt Lange was given the loss, his first of the year.
