SHARKS WIN! Women's Lacrosse Triumphs over Stetson, 13-8

DELAND, FLA. – The LIU women's lacrosse team traveled to the Sunshine State on Sunday, defeating Stetson, 13-8. With the victory, the Sharks improve to 1-7, and the Hatters fall to 2-4. 
 
SHARK BITES
  • Stetson scored the game's first goal at the 12:54 mark in the first, but LIU fired off five unanswered goals to end the frame. Francesca Vasile-Cozzo scored the first of five less than a minute later off a Hannah Keneally assist to tie the game at 1-1.
  • On a free positon attempt, Amanda Masullo gave the Sharks their first lead with seven minutes to go at 2-1. Jen Gaffney and Whitney Moran would trade goals to bump the lead to 4-2. Masullo would add her second free position goal of the period, making it 5-1, LIU, after one.
  • The Hatters would outscore the Sharks 3-2 in the second frame, but Amanda Dowler got on the scoresheet with her first goal of the match at the 8:16 mark. Gaffney also scored her second goal of the afternoon in the second period, giving the Sharks a 7-3 lead heading into halftime. Hailey Duchnowski picked up five saves in the first 30 minutes.
  • After Stetson responded with two goals in the third, Masullo scored her third goal off a Moran assist, bringing the score to 8-6, LIU, heading into the fourth. With Masullo's third goal, she tallied her third hat trick of the season.
  • The fourth and final period of regulation was dominated by the Sharks, outscoring the Hatters 5-2. Stetson drew within a goal on two occasions, but LIU maintained its advantage on the scoreboard.
  • Gaffney scored off a Vasile-Cozzo assist with 13:33 remaining, making it 9-7 before the Hatters answered again. LIU closed the door on a potential comeback by scoring four unanswered on two goals from both Moran and graduate student Leah Nonnenmann, the first of her Sharks career, to bring the final to 13-8.
  • Duchnowski earned the win in cage, her first of the season, finishing with 10 saves on the afternoon. Masullo and Brianna Tribble each won four draw controls, as well.
  • Additionally, Duchnowski picked up her 100th save of the season. Duchnowski is first in the country in total saves (100) and third in saves per game (12.5). 
 
Up next, the Sharks will travel to Manhattan College on Saturday, March 19 at 3:00 p.m. for their last non-conference bout of the season.
