RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The LIU women's lacrosse team traveled into the city to take on Manhattan Saturday afternoon for its final non-conference game of 2022, falling to the Jaspers, 14-11. With the loss, the Sharks fall to 1-8 on the season.
SHARK BITES
- The Jaspers scored first in 21 seconds into the contest, but LIU responded when Hannah Kenneally scored an unassisted goal at the 12:54 mark to tie the game at one apiece. The next seven goals of the game were traded back and forth between the two teams, with LIU trailing 3-2 after the opening quarter. Amanda Masullo scored the other Shark goal in the first off Jen Gaffney's assist.
- To start the second, Masullo won the draw control, which led to Whitney Moran scoring her first goal of the afternoon to lock the game at 3-3. Manhattan would respond moments later to retake the lead.
- Olivia Fantigrossi would score the final goal of the second for the Sharks, thanks to a Francesca Vasile-Cozzo assist, to the game at 4-4. At halftime, LIU trailed Manhattan, 6-4.
- Both offenses exploded in the third, scoring a combined nine goals that included 4-0 runs from both the Sharks and Jaspers. Keneally scored the first goal of the second half before Manhattan rattled off four straight goals to lead 12-5.
- LIU kickstarted their run with just 45 seconds in the third when Masullo tallied her second of the game. Isabelle Peng won the following draw control, and Gaffney was able to rebound a shot off the post and find the back of the net to close the period. It was 12-7, Manhattan, after three.
- Gaffney earned a free position opportunity in the early stages of the fourth and cashed in to register to bring the game within four. Whitney Moran picked up a goal at the 8:35 mark in the fourth, bringing the score to 12-9.
- Manhattan scored two goals before Gaffney scored and picked up her second hat trick in as many games. Kenneally scored the last Sharks goal with 3:46 left to earn her first hat trick of the season. Manhattan put in one more goal to bring the final to 15-11.
- Hailey Duchnowski finished with nine saves, and Catherine Robles forced two turnovers to lead the defense.
