SHARKS WIN! Women’s Ice Hockey Defeats Post, 5-1

WATERBURY, Conn. – The LIU women's ice hockey team traveled to Connecticut to play Post University in their last game of the regular season on Saturday, downing the Eagles 5-1.  

With the win, the Sharks finish the year as co-champions of the NEWHA regular season, splitting the title with Franklin Pierce University. It is the first regular season championship for the Sharks. LIU will be the second seed in the tournament, and will have a bye into the semifinals, where they will play the highest remaining seed of the quarter final.
 
SHARK BITES
  • A slow start to scoring led to no goals for either side in the first period, three goals netted for the Sharks in the second, and two more in the third. The Eagles managed to score once in the third, but LIU grabbed the 5-1 win.
  • There were no goals in the first, but just 24 seconds into the second period, the Sharks struck with a goal from Abby Latorella. She was assisted by Megan Bouveur and Stella Scott. LIU went up 1-0 on the Eagles.
  • Midway through the period, Bouveur got a goal of her own with another Scott assist and an assist from Jeannie Wallner. Just two minutes later, Wallner got a goal of her own on assists from Maggie Culp and another assist for Bouveur. The Sharks found themselves up 3-0 on Post with one period left to play.
  • Wallner got her second goal of the afternoon to put LIU up 4-0 over their hosts in the first two minutes of the third period. She was assisted by Alex Thomas and Culp.
  • With six minutes left to play, the Eagles netted a goal to put the score at 4-1. Forty seconds later though, Scott got a goal for herself thanks to assists from Maggie Korneta and Alva Johnsson and the Sharks finished the match 5-1.
