Women's Lacrosse Meets With Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. – LIU women's lacrosse traveled to Columbia on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup, falling to the Lions, 10-9. Amanda Masullo led the Sharks' offense with a four-goal outing.

  • Columbia scored with 5:19 remaining in the first, but Masullo scored an unassisted goal just 13 seconds later to tie the score.
  • After the Lions went back up, Whitney Moran would find the back of the net with just four seconds left in the first to bring the score to 2-2 after one period.
  • The second saw only one goal from either side, courtesy of Moran off an assist from Masullo, to give the Sharks the lead at halftime, 3-2. LIU outshot Columbia on goal 7-2 in the second period. 
  • In the third, both offenses started to pick up steam. Columbia answered to tie the game at 3-3 before the Sharks rattled off back-to-back goals from Moran and Masullo to retake the lead at 5-3.
  • Ava Taylor scored a free position goal with 3:01 to go in the third to push the LIU lead to 7-4. It was 7-5 heading to the fourth.
  • After Columbia scored three unanswered, Masullo scored her fourth goal to tie the game at eight apiece. Both teams traded goals before Jen Gaffney scored her first of the afternoon at 2:13. The Sharks eventually fell, 10-9.
  • Hailey Duchnowski finished with 12 saves in the game. Sydney Marzano caused two turnovers to help lead the defense.
  • Up next, the Sharks return home on Saturday, February 26 to face Monmouth at 1:00 p.m.
