CARY, N.C. – LIU baseball opened its season at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., facing Northeastern University on Friday night. The Sharks took down the Huskies, 5-3, with Joshua Loeschron collecting the win. Loeschorn threw five innings, allowing no runs in one hit.
SHARK BITES
- LIU scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Bentley Boekhout flew out on a sacrifice fly, scoring Seth Surrett. Moments later, Brian O'Boyle grounded out to first, allowing Michael Edelman to score the second run of the inning.
- Surrett reached on an error in the third to score Edelman, adding to the Sharks lead to make it 3-0.
- In the sixth, LIU saw two more runs come across the plate when Colin Adams reached on a wild pitch, followed by another RBI from Boekhout to score Edelman on a single. It was 5-0 heading into the home half of the inning.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Garrett Yawn surrendered three runs to cut the lead to 5-3. Josh Gainer came in from the bullpen to toss two and a third innings, striking out five en route to set up Nick Torres.
- Torres came on to close in the bottom of the ninth, giving up no hits and no runs to earn his first save of the season.
- Surrett led the offense, going two-for-four and scoring two runs. Adams finished one-for-three at the plate with two runs scored, as well.
- Loeschorn earned the win, while Cam Schittler took the loss for Northeastern. Torres earned the save.
- Up next, the Sharks will face Penn State in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 19 starting at noon.
