EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The LIU men's hockey team continues to show no fear against the nation's elite programs.
The Sharks took No. 10 UConn to overtime on Thursday night at Northwell Ice Center before falling 2-1.
Hudson Schandor scored 44 seconds into the extra session to end it.
So far this season, the Sharks have defeated then-No. 12 Ohio State, tied then-No. 7 Quinnipiac and taken then-No. 9 Northeastern to overtime.
UConn had jumped to a 1-0 lead on Andrew Lucas' power-play goal with
Valtteri Piironen serving a tripping penalty. However, the Sharks drew even before the first period ended when
Austin Brimmer finished the rebound of teammate
Nolan Welsh's shot from the right flank.
The Sharks had a handful of stellar opportunities to win the game in regulation. That included having
Noah Kane's one-time shot from point-blank range getting turned away by Huskies goaltender Arsenii Sergeev with nine minutes remaining in regulation. It also included a point-blank stop on
Zachary Nazzarett with time winding down in the second period.
Vinnie Purpura stood out in goal for the Sharks, making 33 saves.
The teams meet again on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. at XL Center in Hartford.
