HARTFORD, Conn. — The LIU men's ice hockey team continues to torment nationally ranked opponents.
Unfortunately for the Sharks, a pair of tightly contested games against No. 10 UConn both ended in losses.
Anthony Vincent and Austin Rook produced third period goals, each time pulling LIU within one goal. However, the Sharks ultimately tell to the host Huskies, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon at XL Center.
Justin Pearson cemented the victory for UConn with a goal with 2 minutes, 18 seconds remaining in regulation.
UConn had won Thursday's meeting on Long Island 2-1 in overtime.
On Saturday, Vincent produced his team-leading 13th goal to pull the Sharks within 3-2 with 13:36 remaining. The wrister from the left circle whizzed past UConn goaltender Logan Terness with 6-foot-5 Riley Wallack setting a screen at the edge of the crease.
Later in the period, Rook tallied his first goal with LIU on a one-timer off a crossing pass to pull the Sharks within 4-3.
LIU returns to action Jan. 13 at Princeton.
