EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — Tindra Holm only was asked to make a relatively modest 18 saves on Friday night. A handful proved dazzling and allowed the LIU women's ice hockey team to extend its winning streak to eight games.
Holm produced her fourth shutout of the season and
Carrigan Umpherville scored the decisive goal as the Sharks defeated Sacred Heart, 2-0, at Northwell Health Ice Center.
Among Holm's saves was turning away a second-period breakaway from Katie Keenan to preserve a one-goal advantage. Holm similarly had stopped Kelly Solak in the first period on a shorthanded chance after the Pioneer got a step on an LIU defenseman and had an unimpeded path toward Holm.
"It wasn't an extreme amount of shots, but when we went in the locker room after the game and we said congrats for the shutout to Tindra, we talked about how she really had to work for it," coach
Kelly Nash said. "Sacred Heart definitely created several scoring chances off those limited shots that they had."
Umpherville's goal was assisted by
Jeannie Wallner and
Ashley Morrow only 3 minutes, 41 seconds into the game.
Morrow added an empty-net goal with 20.0 seconds remaining to secure the win.
LIU improved to 10-6 overall and 9-1 in NEWHA.
The Sharks return to action next Friday when they host Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m.
"We definitely like how we're playing right now," Nash said. "We were saying last week that we finally had found some good combinations with forwards and defensive pairs. And our goaltending has been consistent all season. We're in a groove right now. We like it."
