FIRST THING! Women's Hockey Tops FPU to Claim Top Spot in NEWHA Standings

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — The unbeaten streak now stands at 10 straight games. And the latest victory has vaulted the LIU women's ice hockey team into first place in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance.

The Sharks defeated Franklin Pierce, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Northwell Health Ice Center behind goals from Anya Weilandt and Carrigan Umpherville and a pair from Abby Latorella.

Weilandt's score, which came in the final minute of the first period to even the scoring at 1, was the first of her collegiate career.

LIU overcame an early one-goal from Franklin Pierce's Cailey McLaughlin, which opened the game's scoring, to improve to 11-6-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the conference.

The Ravens scored with 2:54 remaining in the third period to pull within 3-2, but Latorella answered with an empty-net goal with 80 seconds remaining to secure the win.

The Sharks are 9-0-1 in their past 10 games — the lone non-win during that stretch coming Friday night with a come-from-behind 2-2 tie against Franklin Pierce.

With 21 points, LIU caught Saint Anselm (10-3-1) on Saturday for first place in the conference. And the Sharks have two games in hand.

LIU returns to action with a pair of nonconference games next weekend against Minnesota State Mankato at Northwell Health Ice Center. Freshman Annie Abramson is expected to earn the start in goal in those games, with Tindra Holm due to depart for Team Sweden and a Five Nations tournament on Sunday.
