Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Adam Rubin

Men's Hockey Downs No. 12 Ohio State to Earn Program's First-Ever Win vs. Ranked Foe!

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. — History achieved! No overtime required, either.

Anthony Vincent danced around a pair of Ohio State players while flying down the right wing boards and centered to Adam Goodsir for the decisive goal with 7 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in regulation as the LIU men's ice hockey team defeated No. 12 Ohio State, 3-2, on Friday night at Northwell Health Ice Center.

The win marked the Sharks' first-ever victory against a ranked opponent — although the third-year program had been oh-so-close on a pair of other occasions earlier this season, taking then-No. 9 Northeastern and then-No. 7 Quinnipiac to overtime, and collecting a point in the latter game.

Friday's win also marked LIU's first-ever win against a Big Ten opponent.

"It means everything," said Brett Riley, the only head coach in the program's history. "The first Big Ten win. The first top-15 win — ranked for that matter too. To be that close this year and finally flip the script ... I'm at a loss for words, really."

LIU had trailed 2-1 midway through the second period.

Then, defenseman John Gormley's wrist shot from the point got past screened Ohio State goaltender Jakub Dobes, the reigning Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and a Montreal Canadiens draft pick, to even the score at 2 midway through the second period.

It was Gormley's first goal of the season.

The teams had spent a good deal of time on the man advantage to that point, with all three of the game's earlier goals on the power play.

That included Austin Brimmer scoring in front on the power play in the first period to open the game's scoring. Brimmer had been crosschecked behind the play by Mason Lohrei to draw the penalty.

Goodsir and Vincent, who combined on the winning goal, both are grad transfers in their first season with the Sharks.

"His speed is incredible," Goodsir said about Vincent. "It's awesome playing with him. He's a workhorse. He did all the work. He just gave me the puck and I finished it off. It was a great play."

Goaltender Vinnie Purpura made 32 saves in the victory.

The teams meet again Saturday at 8 p.m. at Northwell Health Ice Center. Tickets are available here.
