Box Score HAMDEN, Conn. — The LIU men's hockey team is putting fear into the nation's top teams.
The Sharks earned a 2-2 tie with seventh-ranked Quinnipiac on Sunday as goaltender
Vinnie Purpura produced 37 saves.
It marked the second time in the young season that LIU took an elite team to overtime. The Sharks fell to then-No. 9 Northeastern in OT to open the season last weekend.
"I thought we played a really sound game for 60 minutes," Purpura said. "We capitalized on a couple of opportunities that ultimately took us into OT against a top-10 team. It's unfortunate we came away with just a tie, but there is certainly stuff to build off of going into future games. We are proving that we can play with these top teams."
The Sharks rallied from a 2-0 deficit on Sunday at M&T Bank Arena.
They got on the scoreboard late in the second period when
Chris Pappas stole the puck and then converted, tucking it inside the left post.
Anthony Vincent then produced the equalizer with 4:09 remaining in regulation with a wrister.
Purpura's 15 saves in the third period included stopping a point-blanked redirection attempt from TJ Friedmann just before the buzzer ending regulation.
"Their guy made a very savvy pass with five seconds left to a guy on the doorstep," Purpura said. "I just extended my leg out looking to make the stop, and luckily their guy shot it into me."
LIU did fall in the shootout as its three shooters were stopped, although the game officially is recorded as a tie.
It marked LIU's first-ever point against a top-10 team. The Sharks also tied then-No. 16 UMass Lowell last season.
The Sharks return to action Friday at RPI.
