PHILADELPHIA — Sunday proved to be a historic for LIU men's fencing in its first-ever competition.
Freshman
Mo Elsayed finished as the gold medalist in the épée.
"It was a great result for Mo," assistant coach
Dwight Smith said. "He set the tone for the rest of the season. The team really stepped up and supported each other all weekend and it was key to our individual successes."
Elsayed, who finished in the top eight at the Tokyo Games in 2021, set the bar high in his collegiate debut for the Sharks.
"I'm so happy for this result," Elsayed said. "I'm proud to be a part of the first men's fencing team at LIU. I'm looking forward to competing with the guys the rest of the regular season.
Among other finishes,
Andrew Gefell placed 15th in the saber competition out of 60 competitors.
Richard Chen and
Eduardo Duarte were inside the top 30.
LIU returns to action Nov. 6 at the Drew Rangers Fall Invitational.
